Family Commitments

By applying to be a part of our community, you agree to the following family commitments:

1. Families must commit to pursuing a classical course of studies at home.

We share academic pursuits together within the classical tradition, therefore it is imperative that all Ad Meliora families commit to classically educating their children, emphasizing the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty and engaging in the study of the liberal arts and the great books. Studies should include logic, writing, and rhetoric as well as the great books, mathematics, and science. We recommend that students have a foundational knowledge of Latin or another classical language. Our community will cover only some of these courses, therefore families should commit to the other courses in their homeschools.

2. Families must commit to attending consistently for an entire school year.

Because we desire to be a community, it is important for families to consistently attend for the entire school year. We understand that situations may arise that will require absences and/or a withdrawal from our community, but we ask that families uphold their commitment to our community to the best of their abilities. Families that have more than four unexcused absences will be asked to meet with the directors.

3. Educating parent must commit to support the academy.

We aim to provide a supportive community not only for the students but also for the homeschooling parents.  Because we desire this type of community, we ask parents to be involved in supporting the academy.

Requirements:

  • Parents of grades K-5 are required to attend our main community day with their children to build meaningful connections within our learning community. Parents of grades 6+ may choose to stay on site or enroll in the drop-off program. One parent from each family not participating in the drop-off program is required to support the academy weekly in one or more of the following ways:  assisting or teaching in the classroom, leading or helping in the nursery/preschool, serving as recess/study hall monitor, planning activities/events, or stepping in as a substitute when needed.

  • For families who are enrolled in the drop-off program, parents are still required to serve the community through a variety of volunteer options including planning activities/events, serving with administrative tasks, etc.

4. Parents must commit to oversee students’ work during the week, and students must commit to complete the work and participate in class each week.

Subjects on community days will be extended with assignments at home to provide a full curriculum for the year. The academy teachers will provide a syllabus or weekly assignment sheets and will communicate with parents either through email, online portal, or printed assignment sheets. Parents are responsible to ensure the student has completed homework and is ready to participate in class each week. Elementary students should expect approximately 1-2 hours of homework per class each week; middle school students should expect approximately 2-3 hours of homework per class each week, and high school students should expect 2-4 hours of homework per class each week. (For example, a middle school student taking writing, science, and logic should expect to spend around 6-8 hours on homework each week, or around 2 hours per day).

5. Families must commit to splitting the cost of the chosen curriculum and supplies.

Ad Meliora provides all required curriculum for each student, with the exception of non-consumable items (such as science textbooks or literature books) that families may choose to purchase on their own and share among siblings. Before the school year, the directors will provide an estimated cost breakdown. Half is due upon enrollment, and the remaining balance is due by the first day of class. Because materials are purchased in advance, fees are non-refundable. Final costs may vary based on curriculum choices and the number of students sharing split costs. If non-consumables are purchased by Ad Meliora for a class, they remain the property of Ad Meliora.
